Project overview

Our River, Our Water is a free education programme for primary schools across Kent and East Sussex, designed to inspire young people to understand and value water.

Delivered in the Medway and surrounding catchments from September 2025, the programme helps pupils explore their local rivers while learning about water as a vital resource for both people and wildlife.

By combining classroom learning with real-world experiences, we support children to build knowledge, confidence and a deeper connection with the natural environment.

Why it matters

The South East of England is one of the most water-stressed regions in the UK.

Lower rainfall, a growing population and a changing climate are increasing pressure on water resources. Helping young people understand these challenges is key to building a more sustainable future.

Through this programme, pupils learn:

  • Why water is essential for people and wildlife
  • How rivers support healthy ecosystems
  • The challenges facing water resources in the South East
  • How their actions can make a positive difference
